    Answer: 2

Double. Takeout. "Borrow" a king, so you have enough for a takeout double. You wouldn't double in "direct" position. Don't let them play in 1♠

    Answer: 2

Double. Passing and letting them play in their 8-card fit is a recipe for 40% games. Double for takeout and try to play a partscore (making or down 50 or 100) to do better than 110. Also, you might push them to 3♠.

With #3, it is helpful if you have a conventional way to show a 2-suited hand (such as DONT or Cappelletti).

    What is your call with:

    ♠ 2
    ♥ KJ3
    ♦ 108765
    ♣ Q1076?

    3. -

    4♠

    4. -

    Other

    Answer: 3

4♠. Partner should have 7 cards in hearts. Your side has 10 trumps, so you should further the preempt by raising to the 10-trick level. Don't worry about psychology as to how many spades your opponents will bid or make. Just take up a level of their space.

    Answer: 3

Double. With shortness in their suit (even with a dead minimum), opener should double (for takeout) in balancing seat. Quite often, partner has a penalty (trap) pass of 1♠ and will leave it in.

    3♠

    4. -

    Other

    Answer: 1

Pass. You have no reason to compete to the 3-level. You don't have shortness in their suit or a 9-card fit (if partner had 6 hearts, he would have competed to 3♠).  Yes, double could work if you set them, but try to avoid getting bottom boards.  Likely 3♠ is down and 3♠ would also be down.

    3♠

    4♠

    5. -

    Other

    Answer: 3

3♠. With 9 trumps, compete to the 3 level. This is not inviting partner to go to 4. Even if 3♠ is down 50, likely they would have made 110 in 3♠, so you are better off bidding.
