Greetings!
May is here, and I am hitting the tournament trail. There are some major tournaments upcoming, including the World Championships in Verona next month.

In this issue, you'll find answers to some often-asked bidding questions. Also, please spread the word about the opportunity to combine a vacation with intermediate bridge lessons from Larry.

High-wire act
What are doubles of large opening bids?
What does it mean if you double the opponents' 4H opening? How about 4S or higher? It makes no sense to define such doubles as "penalty." When was the last time you held a trump stack against their 8-card suit? It is more likely you have any "good" hand. Double should mean you have offensive values and your partner will typically remove the double with shape, and leave it in if he has a balanced hand or "nothing to say." On the rare (it never happens) occasion where you happen to be dealt honors/tricks/length in the suit opened, just pass (and hope partner doubles).

Here is an article about such a deal (alas, a sad one) that I played with my partner, David Berkowitz.

1NT with a 5-card Major?
They always want to know
Question The #1 question. Bridge teachers are always getting asked: "Should I open 1NT with a 5-card major?" Click here to see Larry weigh in on the subject.
